Fire Safety Inspection Checklist

A fire safety inspection checklist is used to check and identify the potential hazards, sources of hazards, and corresponding risks that can lead to fire, explosion, and loss of the property, human lives, product, and business reputation etc.

A summary of the hazard sources is written below;

- Damaged wiring
- Smoking Near stored fuels
- Sparking
- Short Circuit
- Electrostatic Charge
- Use of damaged equipment
- Hot Work

A summary of arrangements that are needed is listed below;

1. Fire safety arrangements should be made to fight fire at workplace e.g., Fire Extinguishers, Fire Hose Reel, Heat Detectors, Smoke Detectors, Fire Alarm, Sprinkle System, Foam Flooding system etc. Detection system should be selected according to worksite. Use of smoke detector in those areas where smoke or steam production is normal will not be effective. For example use of smoke detector in kitchen.

2. Building should be divided into compartments using fire doors, fire windows, shafts and vents should be sealed to prevent spread of smoke and heat etc.

3. Special arrangements should be made for the disabled people who can't move and exit the premises by themselves e.g., Trembler for blind people, lights for dead people, buddy system for them as well as assistance to the pregnant women present on worksite.

4. Assembly points should be established and the people must be instructed to proceed to the assembly points in case of fire.

5. Refugee points should be established for the people with the refugee time of 30 minutes at least.

6. Emergency Contact numbers of rescue services should be mentioned.

7. Emergency Exit Points should be established, the exit passage ways should be clear, unblocked, ready to use. Emergency Lighting arrangements are basic requirements. Reasonable number of exit points should be made.

8. Safety signs should be placed on site to indicate the location of fire fighting equipment, fire exits, smoking areas, assembly points etc.

9. Flammable materials should be stored on safe location and segregated. Hot work activities should be prohibited in the vicinity of the storage area.

10. All the electrical and hot surfaces carrying equipment should be insulated, spark arrestors should be fitted where required.

11. Regular trainings should be done followed by Mock Drills to ensure everyone is aware of the fire safety requirements and ready to respond to any unintentional incident.

12. Inspection, Testing, and maintenance of the firefighting and fire protection system is done as per legal requirements.
