Permit to Work is an essential part of the Safe System of Work, implemented with an aim to control hazardous activities and mitigate the risk level to a minimum by systematically inspecting the work procedure so that hazards are identified and corrective actions are adapted.

The permits to work can be of different nature according to the nature of the work, for example;

1. Hot Work Permit
2. Cold Work Permit
3. Radiography Permit
4. Lifting Work Permit
5. Excavation Work Permit
6. Work At Height Permit
7. Electrical Work Permit
8. Grinding Work Permit
9. Confined Space Entry Work Permit

The work permit should be prepared by a competent person and received by a permit receiver. A competent person is one who is trained and experienced enough to perform the job in the given situation.

Despite all controls and corrective actions, if the working condition is not favorable, the work should be suspended. It is worthy to note that, the work permit duration shouldn't exceed the work duration. On top of this, if the work duration has exceeded, the work should be suspended, and the permit should be extended. Once permit extension has been done, the work can be resumed.
