Liquid chemicals are widely used in the workplace and in routine life for various activities. The chemicals can be flammable or easily ignitable and loss can be suffered if not managed properly. Liquid Chemical bulk storage is a vital responsibility of the organization. As per the law, the organization should make arrangements for this purpose.

The organization should ensure that;

  1. Approved containers and canisters should be used for storage and movement around the workplace.
  2. The chemicals should be placed in fireproof cabins or above the ground with a gap between the floor and the bed of the cabin.
  3. A spill tray should be placed under the storage cabin to catch any spillage.
  4. The storage area should be provided with fireproof material, and any ignition source should be removed.
  5. The storage made outside the store room should be up to 25 gallons maximum.
  6. The bunding should be made around the open storage area as the secondary containment.
  7. The bunding wall should be between 0.5m to 1.5m in height, while it should be able to hold 110% of the maximum capacity of the largest storage tank.
  8. The bunding should be made up of concrete material and provided with the drain, dumping, and interceptors in order to contain the spilled liquid.
  9. Safety signs should be provided and placed at the site.
  10. The safety data sheet should be available at reasonable locations, well highlighted, and updated with the introduction or removal of any liquid.
  11. The storage room should be provided with active and passive fire protection systems, and all of these systems should be functional at all times.
  12. Storage area inspection and maintenance are mandatory.
  13. The distance between the storage facility and the nearest public-occupied building should be more than 20ft.
